HERstory in Focus: Aza Mansongi's Powerful Exploration of Identity at HERstory Reframed
Aza Mansongi - Kinshasa, DRC
In a world where traditional narratives often overlook the stories of women, HERstory Reframed emerges as a beacon of change. This groundbreaking sixth edition of the small & Iconic miniature art exhibition series brings to light the stories of three remarkable female artists hailing from francophone African countries. Among them shines Aza Mansongi, whose captivating exploration of identity transcends borders and resonates with audiences worldwide.
Aza Mansongi's artistic journey is a testament to resilience and determination. Born in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Aza discovered her passion for art at a young age. Encouraged by her parents, she pursued her artistic aspirations despite facing initial challenges. With unwavering support, Aza honed her skills, eventually obtaining a degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa.
So, what inspires Aza's thought-provoking works?
In her own words, "I am inspired by my environment and everyday events." But it's not just what she sees; it's how she feels it. When inspiration dips, she seeks solace in nature, sharing conversations and meals with fellow artists and scientists. Museums, travel, and even seeing movies at the cinema all play a role in her creative process, allowing her to disconnect and recharge for the artistic bursts to come.
Within HERstory Reframed, Aza unveils a series of evocative works that traverse the landscapes of identity, from the familial bonds of "The Family Unit" to the resilient spirit embodied in "Perseverance" and the socio-economic narratives depicted in "Africa Today" and "Economic Effects."
In this digest, we spotlight how Aza Mansongi uses her works as a tool for exploring identities and rewriting societal perceptions of women.

The Artistic Vision of Aza Mansongi
1. The Family Unit
This powerful series celebrates the unwavering bond between mothers and their children. It's a love that transcends social status, a love that compels mothers to make countless sacrifices for their families' well-being. Through her vibrant canvases, Aza portrays the strength and resilience of these women who juggle the roles of mother and wife.
2. Perseverance
With each brushstroke in this series, Aza portrays the remarkable strength wielded by female artists. She sheds light on the challenges they face in a professional environment and the constant pressure to prove themselves and outperform their male counterparts. Yet, through it all, perseverance is key. This series is a testament to the unwavering spirit that female artists possess, particularly in the face of adversity.
3. Africa Today
This series confronts the harsh reality of the rising cost of living in Africa. The burden falls heavily on women, who manage the household budgets and strive to put food on the table despite shrinking resources. Through her art, Aza amplifies the struggles of these women, yet also celebrates their resourcefulness in finding solutions.
4. Emancipation
Inspired by contemporary society, this artwork speaks to the growing awareness of women's rights and the fight for equality. It's a tribute to the strong women in the eastern DRC who endured the hardships of war and continue to fight for a brighter future for themselves and their families.
5. Economic Effects
This two-part series explores the economic realities faced by women in Africa. It delves into the concept of group savings, a common practice where women come together to pool their resources and support each other. These gatherings are not just to discuss finances; they're a safe space for women to share their struggles and find solutions together.
HERstory Reframed serves as a platform for marginalised voices to reclaim their narratives and challenge existing stereotypes. By showcasing the diverse perspectives of female artists from francophone Africa, the exhibition fosters dialogue and promotes cultural exchange. Through their art, Aza and her peers empower women to embrace their identities and celebrate their contributions to the African art scene.
